In this photo your eye is first drawn to the rip in the flag. The rip emphasizes how old and tattered the flag is. The lighting is darkened, but because the lighting is so dim, the brightness in the photo shows the off white stars and strips.
The photo draws you in with the dramatic contrasts of white and black. It makes you want to look more closely into the photo, but then you realize that the subject is really odd. Your eye is drawn into the upper left corner of the picture where there is a random bright yellow strip. It ties in the rest of the photo and completes it in a way.
